Veg Update 10th April 2010
10-04-2010

Leeks have really started to bulk out recently in this good weather but we are also seeing the first sign of them bolting (flowering) in the earlier varieties. (no chemicals applied).

This week there is an English round lettuce. They are very similar to Oakleaf lettuce apart from the fact that they are produced in polly tunnels. They are soft on the outside with slightly crispier leaves towards the heart. The first lettuces in the UK this year – perfect timing now the sun is shining!

Our carrots still taste great. We have decided not to harvest them and store them due to the effects the frost had on their storage ability so we will continue to harvest what we need every week until it becomes in-efficient. We currently have to grade about 40% of the crop out (no chemicals applied).

Main crop potatoes are now ceaser. Ceaser is a much lighter potato- great for roasting and mashing (blight control applied). The onion store is now empty so we are buying them in from North Devon. They are larger than ours and just as tasty! (No chemicals applied).

Parsnips are in the boxes again this week. We have enough for 2 more weeks. They are tasting good and are large. Perfect for roasting! (No chemicals applied).

Cauliflowers are in full form now with nothing to stop them growing. They are getting bigger by the week and we have about 3 weeks worth (no chemicals applied).

Red Russian kale is in the boxes this week. Our main winter red Russian kale has started to flower now so we have one cut left in our other field then its over till next year (no chemicals applied). English spring onions are in the boxes this week to help you on your way to a nice salad in this beautiful weather!

Beetroot is in the boxes this week after their month long break. They will go nicely with a salad or if rain does appear, (you can’t trust the weather man these days!), it’s nice on a rainy day as-well in cakes or thinly sliced for a starter (no chemicals applied).

Finally, however, some good weather has arrived - the tractors are all out, weeds are flying ahead and things are suddenly looking up! We finally managed to get the fleece back on our carrots which blew off and the sugar snap peas have gone into the ground.

*Our grass cutting season has started as well so if you are in need of your grass cutting, no matter how big or small, contact us on 01364 646106 or email me direct at ben@nearlynakedveg.co.uk.

I have played around with the contents of the box this week to make it more suited to the weather. There is relevant produce for you to have either a great Sunday roast or a barbeque in the great weather. The weather report suggests we should be with this sunshine for a good week or so.

Excellent!

See you soon, Ben & Cooper
